Glad my thread was helpful for you. I started it and showed pics because I had questions to at first. and figured I'd try to help others in the future. Ahhh I remember that day. I hate snakes and it's becoming that time of year again for them to pop up around here.

Is there only the bearing at the bottom and the clamp on the shaft...is there anything that keeps the bearing from pushing up in the column?

The pics are great!
If you look at the 2 pics I posted...can you tell me what the washer and threaded nipple are there for? Or is that macgyvering?

Thanks

Steering & column

When I did my power steering conversion, I decided to knock all the old cracked plastic (like yours), off the wire frame & hub for the steering wheel. I found a suitable hardwood, and made the appropriate pieces. My wheel was 3 spoked, as my rig is a '67, and came with that wheel. It turned out really nice and was not too difficult. I will look on my computer later, and see if I can find some photos to post...

Post up pics of that baja I'd really like to see how it looks. I been looking for a black steering wheel for this column. Then it'd be ready to drop in if I decide I want to use it.

I went through this a while back. From what I remember I had 2 different columns. Each had a different bearing at the bottom. One just had a bearing that fit into the plate welded to the bottom and the clamp just pushed the bearing into that plate. The other had a bearing with a piece of rubber around it and that pushed up into that plate but the seat in the plate was different than the other column so I couldn't use that bearing in the other column.
Hope I didn't mix you up.

Here's a better picture showing the lower bearing retainer inside the column. Also can see the bearing and rubber sleeve on the bearing. DaveBB you got ahold of a 4x4 column and a 2wd column they are different in acouple ways. Here's why you had trouble when trying to mix match. 2wd columns use the same upper and lower bearing and 4x4 uses the same upper bearing as a 2wd BUT use a different bearing and use a sleeve. Here's the parts needed to rebuild the 4x4 column.

Top bearing C3DZ-3517-B

Top bearing sleeve B1AZ-3518-A

Lower bearing F23Z-3517-B

Lower bearing sleeve C6TZ-3518-A

2wd columns use the same upper and lower bearing (C3DZ-3517-A) and sleeve (B1AZ-3518-A). 4x4 uses the same upper bearing and sleeve as a 2wd.

BUT use a different lower bearing and sleeve. Here's the parts needed to rebuild the 4x4 column.

Top bearing F23Z-3517-B C3DZ-3517-A ~ Available from Ford

Top bearing sleeve B1AZ-3518-A ~ Available from Ford

Lower bearing F23Z-3517-B Available from Ford

Lower bearing sleeve C6TZ-3518-A Obsolete
C6TZ-3518-A =

NOS PARTS LTD in Waxahachie TX has 2 = 972-937-2201.

Awesome response Bill I was actually hoping you'd reply back. That's up to the next guy to figure out on finding the parts needed. I am grateful I got them. I wanted to clarify exactly what's needed for any confusion on parts between the 2wd and 4x4 since this thread is about the 4x4 column.

F23Z-3517-B is available from Ford and replaced: F23Z-3517-A, E1FZ-3517-B, E1FZ-3517-A, D4TZ-3517-A, D0AZ-3517-A, C7SZ-3517-D, C3AZ-3517-A.

I think that's all of the replaced part numbers.

Are you talking about the columns or what part exactly are you wanting to know the difference on?
