just wondering is there a 4 cyl ford ranger 4x4 at all?or are they all 6 cyl?im going to be buying my first ranger soon since i dont need a full size truck anymore and there smaller and better on gas but i was reading that the ranger ranger 4x4 6 cyl only get 14 mpg city and the f 250 4x4 only get 12 mpg city.so since im trying to save on gas looking for a 4cyl if possible if not then ill go with the 6 cyl.thanks

 

ive seen one the owner said it was factory 2.3 5speed 4x4 but i'd never seen one before he said it was a gutless monkey

 

I believe that when the Ranger first came out, there was a 4x4 4-cyl option. But that was the early eighties and probably hasn't been available in the U.S. for a long, long time.

 

My buddy has a 83 2.3l 4x4 ranger, runs real good with .040 over, a comp cam, a 32/36 weber carb and a Hooker header..........gets 24mpg around town!

I think 4cyl and 4x4 option died in the gen2 Ranger (89-92)?

 

the 4wd and 2.3 could still be had up until 1997. I've got a '97 2.3 2wd and needed a new tranny. I got a 5 speed manual and transfer case from a 1997 2.3 from a salvage yard. it is pretty handy having low range.
