You can, Moser, Strange and others offer 8 lug 9 inch axles...

However, it would be cheaper to just swap in a Dana 60.

Been wondering about this myself, anyone offer a kit for conversion?
Also been thinking of doing a disc brake conversion on a 9", what are the odds of finding 8 lug rotors that would fit?

i coverted mine to 3/4 ton specs.. mine was a 1979 f-150 2wd, now 3/4 ton 2wd.. it went pretty strait thru, only trouble i ran into was converting the rear from 2.5" wide springs to 3" wide springs. you need to get the spring hangers from your doner truck..

been intrested in this for a while too...
whats the difference between the earlier low pinion d60 and the later high pinion d60??
And a stupid question, how do you tell the d60 from the d44 apart? bolth front and rear... I could probly figure it out on my own, but what could it hurt to ask!

LP60 has pinion at bottom of carrier, closed knuckles behind the spindle and drum brakes. HP60 pinion at top, open knuckles, disc brakes and a 4 inch hub where the lockout is. D44 has a smaller hub.

Although the dana 60 an obviously much larger unit its easy to tell difference if you know them, but look into the forward facing webbing around the front cover there will be a 60 cast into the housing here if its a dana 60 I dont know about the 44s as I have never actually paid much attention to them....

Most fool proof way for determining is the bolts for the inspection cover
Dana 44: 1/2" bolts
Dana 60: 9/16" bolts

Got me there, unless a person swaps in F250 I-beams with spindles.

Are you planning on towing with the 8 lug? Are you looking for more weight capacity? Are you just looking for a stronger axle for more performance? I had an F100 then swapped the engine into a Crewcab F250, I was surprised at the difference in the frame strength. the 250 has a thicker and overall stronger frame. Putting bigger axle may not increase the weight capacity of the truck itself, you probably wont have any problems until you crack or bend the frame. May be a better option to find an F250 and swap the body.
