buying a HIGH mileage ex

Hey guys i was wondering if any of you would shy away from an 05 eddie bauer excursion 4x4 v10 with all the options that has 268,000 miles on it.
I have driven it, and man it drives great other than a tire shimmey, the engine runs smooth and the tranny shifts properly. There are no leaks on this thing @ all. Just want to know from currrent owners if they would jump on it or not.

It would all depend on how much it costs.

Seems a little steep for one with that many miles on it. It is the as new, age wise, as you are going to get though. I paid $7k for a 2000 V10 with 94k on it.

The engine will last forever, but the rest will not. Be prepared for some suspension work especially up front. The "shimmy" can cost several thousand dollars to fix.

I would also have the electrical checked out.

I think 10K is steep.

I would sell you mine with 151K for that.

Kind of high mileage for me.... I know the V10 is low revving so the mileage would seem lower when compared to a V-8.... you said for 8K..... if you really want it that bad, but im sure you can find one with less miles for the same price. I paid 6K for mine and it had 136K on it. Now has 138K.

this is not really a correct statement. the V10 has the widest torque, not to mention the flattest of most engines in it's class. the V10's sweet spot is usually around the 2200rpm range. most of the time is on either side of that rpm range. not to mention the ability to maintain high rpms on steep grades! with it being an over head cam engine, it's actually just the opposite, it is a HIGH reving engine.

with this said, you're also looking at 2 different beasts. you compare the V10 to a V8 (even a 5.4L). if anything the V10 would have the less stress of the 2 engines in the same skeleton. a V10 has 100+ Ft/Lbs torque more than the V8. so speaking in the aspects of how hard the engine has been worked, you're looking at the V8 having to work harder to move the same amount of weight. so 200K on a V10 can't be looked at the same as 200K on a V8. your V8 will have had more stress over that 200K, even if you compare a vehicle that never towed, and was soccer mom driven. the V8 has to work harder to get the weight moving, torque is what turns tires (gets your weight moving)!

For what it's worth, bought ours at 92k for $9,000. I think if you look around more, you'll find one with a lot less miles for a decent price. Just gotta look

I picked mine up last year for $8K, 2002 2WD XLT with V10, 4.30 LS with 113K miles. So far, I haven't seen one for the price I got that was close.

$8K is high for 268K miles.

I bought mine this past June with 140K on it for $6,000. I've put $2,000 in repairs and upgrades since then ($700 of which was for exhaust manifold studs on the driver side.)

Yeah, no matter what, always be prepared to drop some cash in it initially after purchasing it. That goes for any used vehicle though.
