4.6 liter vs. 5.7 liter
My grandpa has a Caprice with a police engine in it, and that thing hauls. I have only driven it a couple times, but when I hit that gas pedal it took off. He gets it to move too. I am not sure what is different about a police engine that any other Chevy 350, but I know that thing goes. I have never driven anything with a 4.6 in it. At least, if I did I didn't know it. Is it true that ford motors are easier to modify than a chevy because ford is more open with thier computers and stuff?

281ci vs 346ci... advantage Chevy. Why is that so hard to understand?
As far as the LT1 (5.7) goes, even the "truck" 5.4 of today will match it in hp and smoke it in torque (with 19 less cubic inches).
Compare the 5.4 (331ci) Cobra R motor to the Z06 5.7 (346) of the same era and what do you get? Comparable power out of slightly less size. Advantage Nobody.
Anybody can produce gobs of power with the new or old technology from Ford or Chevy (or anyone else for that matter), but sales will tell which are preferred.

Engine for engine the new ls1 will dominate the 4.6 there is like 100 hp difference 220 to 320 and the ls1 was underestimated, probably like a second differnece in the 1/4 from what i hear. Catching the lt1 would be a little easier, The best lt1's were only rated at around 270 hp but still a stock 4.6 wont do it.LS1's are so fast up top from 60 and up they just scream. To catch the ls1 with a 4.6 will definately require some mods. Maybe the 05 mustang will get a 5.4

Sorry about the mistake in hp numbers. In 99 the 4.6 hp increased from 225 to 260. I wasnt aware that it increased but the 98 and before GT's did have 225. The supercharged cobra 4.6's can definately take the ls1. Anyone know what they run in the 1/4? Like mid, low 12's?

in my fast fords and muscle mustangs magazine the took an 03 cobra to the track. the only thing they put on it was racing slicks in the back. it ran high 11's consistantly. and for the post all little higher ford does make a mustang with a 5.4 engine in it. its called the COBRA R. it pretty much has a lighting engine in it. the only thing i dont like about it is the big wing it has on the back it makes it ricy looking.

I had a Z28 with the LT1. I ran it against a 2001 GT. We were neck and neck through 4th gear. My car was making around 300 horsepower (275 from the factory, and I added a couple of simple mods). The GT was stock except for exhaust.
So Horsepower is not the only thing you have to consider. Those 4.6s are torque monsters just like most Ford engines.
Also, I have a video of a guy who took his new '03 Cobra out on the town one night. He had a friend sitting in the passenger seat with a video camera. They found a new Camaro SS to pick on. Both of them hit it from a roll, and the Cobra ate the SS up. Totally walked off and left it. So yeh, the LS1 is bad, but it's not nearly as bad as a Ford 4.6 with a blower.

What about the weight difference in the two engines. Is a 5.7 liter so much heavier than a 4.6 that all the extra horse power, or at least most of it, is used to move the extra weight? Any body know what the power to weight ratio for a mustang and camaro is? Or, for a crown vic, and Impala SS, or caprice?
