7.3 IDI Oil Cooler

I take it that the oil cooler on these motors are the unit going from the filter head to the front of the motor? Seems like this truck just wont let me rest. I have water in the oil, and oil in the radiator. Any suggestion as how to test this?

If you have them swapping liquids like you describe, it's a pretty safe bet it's the cooler. Either the o-rings, gasket or the "log" itself. You can get at it through the wheel well and from underneath. I remove the 2 motor mount bolts and jack the engine up and the cooler assembly will come right out the bottom towards the rear.
O-rings are Ford or International only. The gaskets you can get anywhere for around $4.

The red ends tube on my engine here is the cooler.

To pull the oil cooler, take the left front tire off, then the steering shaft out,a nd the cooler will 'twist around' and come out between the engine and the frame rail. Make sure you drain as much antifreeze as possible first!!

Thanks grey. I got it down and found that both the oil & anti-freeze side was just about completely plugged. As with some small metal pieces, both steel & aluminum. Flushed everything out and put back in. I have a haynes manual for this truck, but it does not list the torque specs for the mounting bolts.(nor does it even list an oil cooler for this truck, dang aftermarket books). Does anyone know what these torque specs are, I would appreciate it. Thanx!!!

I really hope you replaced the o-rings while you had the cooler apart, else it may never seal properly again. I have a junkyard cooler laying around here waiting on a rebuild, I get it rebuilt then just swap it in my truck in a few hours.

Also, I've seen it mentioned to not use gaskets where the cooler headers mate to the engine block.

Yes I put in new O-rings and header gaskets. Got the O-rings from IH, and the header gaskets from Advance Auto. Just dont know what the torque specs are for bolting it back down. Does anyone know what they should be?

Ok I have rebuilt the oil cooler as you all have seen. because of other more pressing things at work, I have not done anything but fill the radiator and put oil back into it. As I went back to it today, the oil was high and the water went low, just sitiing there without running it. It was over the course of 2 days and this happened. Tried to turn the motor over, and it wouldn't turn. Sounds like it was fluid locked. Guess I will have to tear it down and check further. Will do a leak down test 1st tho, I guess, lol. Thank god I go on vacation tomarrow!! Wont have to look at this truck for the next 2 weeks. Thanx to all who have given me advice on this rig.

If you suspect hydrolock, pull all 8 glowplugs first. Then turn it over and watch for coolant to escape through the glow plug hole. This will atleast tell you what side to check for head gasket failure or cavitation.

Hello all. I know its been awhile, but I'm back to my project truck. I pulled the glow plugs, and the #4 cylinder was full of water. I yanked the motor and tore off the heads. The head gasket doesn't look to old, so I'm assuming someone has been in there recently. There was no visible signs of the gasket going bad, so I'm gonna have the heads sent out to see if they are cracked. If they turn out ok, I guess I would have to assume I have a cracked block. If so I will be in the market for another motor. Are these 7.3's prone to cracking blocks when overheated, or maybe someone didnt put anti-freeze in it and put block seal in it just to get it sold. Off to the machine shop I go!!

Check that cylinder wall with a light as best as you can. Cavitation is a problem with the 7.3 when coolant maintenance isn't kept up with. It sounds like you may have a pin hole in that cylinder allowing coolant to drain into the cylinder. Not good.
If so, your options are to sleeve it, if you can find a machine shop to do it right and warranty it OR find another block/engine and try again.

It turns out we had a hole/crack in the block. We put a 6.9 in place of it we found out of an 85 F-250. Thank to all that helped on this.
