2 mile commute?
I'd ride my bicycle for that. Seriously, as I ride 17 miles each way during the summer.
I'm not ging to tell a man he doesn't need a big truck but in your case I would go for the gasser. But a 2 mile commute will be hard on any engine. Especially in the winter which will leave the oil full of moisture.

Well with my current truck (gas), I let it idle for 15 minutes or longer before I take off, and by the time I get to work, it's up to temp. Apparently the diesel cannot be done this way.

The new gen. diesels do not like excessive idling. And once again, the best thing you can do for them is work the cr** out of them. They are work horses not cruisers.

Exactly. Not meant for running to the corner store or cruising empty all the time.

if you want a clean diesel that can handle short trips without issues look into the 07.5-10 LMM Duramax trucks....a colleague of mine has an 08 2500HD with about 60k and it's only ever towed once while nearly all his trips are less than 4 miles with a lot of stopping and starting. He has an unmodified truck with all emissions gear intact.

If you remove the EGR and dpf I'd guess our 6.4s would do just as well. The horror stories about diesels I've never experienced, neither have the 52 percent of all total europeans who drive diesels (many of which are Ford TDCi's) as their daily drivers.

Up here, diesel is now $.10 more per litre than gas, about $.38 more per gallon. If you're not running on the highway for a decent haul, fuel cost would get prohibitive pretty damn quick. To think diesel used to be a cheap byproduct of refining gasoline really grinds my gears.

I'm in Georgia and really don't have to worry about extreme cold. My truck is my DD and I work a little over 5 miles from home. I have put a little over 2k miles on it drivin it back and forth from work and have not had even a hiccup out of her. On occassion I do tow our 9k+ travel trailer through the no. ga. mountains and still not a peep. Hope this helps in your decision.

1-owner, 2008 F350, 4x4, 56,000 miles, 6.4L engine, excellent visual condition in and out, with brand new tires. Fellow needs cash and is selling for $31,000. Looking at other prices both private party and retail...this seems like an excellent price to me.

I don't tow anything but a regular trailer a few times a year...nothing an F-150 couldn't handle. I drive back and forth to work which is only about 2 miles from home, and around town as needed.

I already know that this vehicle is overkill for what I do...but I just figured that the price being right, it would be a truck that I would have for many years to come. My question would be...is there any reason NOT to have a diesel?

I'm in a similar situation, but 4 months ago went from a Dodge 1500 to Ford F250 with the 6.4L. My advice is to stick with gassers. There's no value in driving a diesel based on your (and my) requirements. You'll find the additional operating and maintenance costs make this already expensive truck even more expensive to drive. Meanwhile, you're just waiting for your radiator to blow or some other ridiculous mechanical issue to pop up.

But if you decide you still want a diesel, I'll sell you mine. I've decided to get rid of it and go back to a gasser (and a Dodge) so mine is for sale.
