17+ MPG with a 95 351

Well I finally got my 95 Bronco done and on the road Wednesday. Took it to work on Thursday, no major problems. Today Friday I went on a road trip out of state with it. Again no major problems, has a miss when going up a long steep hills. I'm hoping a good tune up will solve that.

So when I stopped to get gas I checked the mileage and was very happy to see that she got 17.52 mpg on the highway. Maybe after a good tune up I can squeeze out 18mpg??

If you would like to check my math...250.8 miles on the tripometer and I put 14.313 gallons of gas in her. That was mostly on the highway with the cruise set at 65mph. I am very pleased with that. My 95 F150 302 never got close to that!!

Unlikly, at 65. You probubly didnt get it as full. Could your tires be smaller than stock? but its not impossible.

Doesn't matter if he burned a full tank or not, as long as the odometer is accurate the math doesn't lie. My truck regularly got 17+ mpg at a steady highways cruise with the 5.8, and that was with the cruise set at 70mph.

The tires are 31x10.50x15. As far as not filling the tank up the same, I filled it up, both times, start and end, till the gas was above the plate in the filler neck.

I'm sure I will not get that kind of MPG at home as I live in the mountains. Most of the driving around here is up hill or down hill. Slow down for the turns, speed back up to get over the hill. I'll see what kind of MPG I get at home on this tank.

Still I was happy to see a little over 17MPG highway.

You don't need a full tank to determine mpg, it's called math.

Oh, man that sucks, try again please?

Oh, yeah, I check my records, and 17 is good to go, I'm getting 13.99 overall, 17 on the highway.

So maybe he had a good tailwind fellas?! Depends on how you drive too. If you can be better than your average Chevy owner and just let the "competition" pass you, you can cruise at a relatively constant speed and maintain decent mileage. Best I've ever done on full highway tanks of fuel is about 16.7 mpg. But then I usually have passengers and luggage etc on board as well.

On the way out it was just me in the Bronco, and on the way back it was me and my Dad. The Bronco is empty, no luggage or anything but some empty parts boxes in the back I need to get rid of. I guess not carrying any unnecessary weight may have helped.

Tailwinds...that's funny. I'll have to remember that next time and see if I can draft some tractor trailers for better economy. LOL

Funny you mention drafting. The first road trip I took in my Sky (yes, I own one #$%ing GM, shoot me), I drafted an F350 SD from Mt. Vernon IL to Evansville IN. Silly little car got 39.6 MPG! The SD driver stopped for fuel at Evansville and I thanked him for letting me hang back there. He asked what kind of mileage I was getting so I told him. He immediately offered to trade vehicles.

My (ex) wife's '96 351 Bronc got 17 highway. The roller cam on the '94 and newer 351s helps. Ford really refined that motor.

The old '83 that I built with a 300/1-bbl carb and 5-speed and tall, narrow 80 psi tires used to get 23 mpg while cruising on my way to work at 40-45 mph. If I went faster than 45, the mileage began to drop off. But TWENTY THREE from a carbed 4x4 gasser!

not to bust your *****, might want to make sure your PSOM is calibrated properly to the size tire your running. I know its only a 31" tire but it may still be off and off enough to sway the mileage. BUT if you did get that mileage that is great.

I am averaging 14mpg on the hwy, cruise set at 65 with my mods, new motor and about 200lbs of gear after a recent elk hunting trip.
