I just picked up an 89 F350 dually 2wd with a 460. It has an auto trans that wont engage, it shifts "into" every gear but wont budge at any rpm....I just want to see if there are any simple things to check before I replace it entirely. I checked the fluid and it looks clean but slightly overfilled. Also, what kind of trans is in it and what trans and transfer case combo would I need to swap it to 4x4? I also have another truck 91 F350 4x4 for donor parts, its single rear wheel but has a 351w with an auto. Thanks!

 

The trans is either a C6 three speed or an E4OD four speed. The only easy thing to check is if it has fluid. Very low fluid could do this, or something mechanical has broken.

The trans in the other truck won't work. The 351 has a different bolt pattern than the 460.
