From what I understand, the textured black plastic is really hard to paint unless you do hours of prep work on it... If you're painting it, go for it, it'll take longer, but save you some $$$$. If you're having a shop do it, it might be cheaper to buy the paintable grille. You'll have to do the math. Call around and ask.

Too bad youre not closer to Colorado. I have a brand new OEM gloss black grill sitting in my garage. What year is your truck? You should be able to buy one gloss black and save yourself the trouble of painting it

Have you tried partsguyed? He's usually really good and from what I hear, very reasonable for FTE members.

I took my 2000 grille off, it was chrome on the outside and some grey poo plah in the inside. I just taped the chrome off and used $4 Krylon Fusion on it and then Clear Coated it twice and its pretty now!! Gloss black and the only flaw is one of my corners i taped bad so its like lined off instead of round LOL. I didnt even sand or anything. I did take it in the shower with me and cleaned it up with laundry detergent LOL!!

Dont judge me. :-)
