I need info on flat head engines

I have a friend that has 2 V8 flat heads that he wants to sell, he's here in N. Ky. but I need to know what numbers to look for. I'm going to stop by and have a look soon so any info I can get would be a great help, he said some numbers was 8 BA maybe, he don't know either, thanks Garry

8BA is the later one. And the better one I think.

My 49 F1 has an 8BA, and my dad's 50 Custom tudor has an 8BA. I THINK it was made from 49-53. There are some subtle differences between the truck engine and the car version. Mainly with the oil pan and some differences in the pulleys and belt widths. It's a 239 cu inch with a whopping 100 horsepower give or take out of the factory. If you don't want it, give me a yell, I'm not too far away.

Mountaindoc, I know nothing about them, he said someone told him that one of the engines was a truck engine, I think he said they were both complete with manifolds, carbs, bellhousings, starter and gererators, he said if someone would take both engines he would sell for 225.00, I have no ideal if that is good or not. Let me know what you think, I can go and get numbers and check to see if they are not locked up and anything else you want me to check, Garry

Yea you better grab them for 225. That is a real good deal. The 8BAs were used in the cars and trucks. The 8RT s were truck engines only. The EABs were car engines with the slightly larger cams which put out 110 horse power. If you were real lucky one might be a mercury with the 4 inch crank. They had 8CM and ECM? on the heads. The older engines from 45-47 (48 for cars) were the 59AB series which had half the bellhousing casted into the block. Also the water necks came out in the middle. Then the 40 ford engines which were the 221s had A on the heads.

$225 would be good if he offered a look inside. Given flatheads' reputation for having cracks, we're talking valve to cylinder, main bearing web, or oil pan flange cracks, btw; you are buying a pig in a poke with no looksee.

Granted, if you are getting two for the price, that makes the gamble more enticing. Still, with a bad crack in both, it would be hard breaking even after parting the good pieces.

If they come with the truck bell-housing/starter plate, that would sweeten the deal, especially if the buyer ended up having to part them.

Never know, might get lucky with one or both being sound.

We'll see. I haven't heard from him yet. Past midnight here. What good is life if you don't gamble or take a risk here and there? I took a gamble last week and landed 4 very good original F1 brake drums, a complete rear end with good rear springs, a complete front axle with complete steering linkage, and an original spare tire carrier in great shape for about the same money.
