5.4 3v in a 93 f150 4x4?
I have a 93 f150 4x4. The 351w that is in the truck is on its last leg. And its the second one I put in it. So now I'm thinking about putting a 5.4 3v and a transmission and t-case to match it. I want to leave it efi and all that. Upgrades will come way later. I would like to know if anyone has done this before or can give me some info on how to do this. Thanks

When you think of fitting a 5.4 or any modular motor into anything, think like you are fitting a big block into what ever you are putting it in. The modular motors outsize the old small blocks "physically" by a lot.
But with that out of the way, if you did this your truck would be the coolest in your town if you did it. It would just be cool to say your 93 f-150 had a 5.4 in it.
and think.....ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE, you just need the time, effort and MONEY.

selling it has crossed my mind but i had
the truck cents i was in the eighth grade. i really cant see me parting with it.... i also think it would be pretty darn cool to tell people about the 5.4 in my 93.... i had a buddy that his spark plug decided to exit the motor going down the road leaving the the threads behind. but it was in a 4.6. but the same thing can happen in a 5.4. so i've herd.

That was the early tritans that would blow the plugs out going down the road. The newer 3v have a wierd plug design that breaks when you try to remove them. The plug and center piece comes out the threads that hold it in how ever don't. I haven't heard of the newer 3v blowing the plugs out though.

I have a 4.6L Triton mounted in my '91 Bronco but have not hooked it up yet. You have to make motor mount plates for it, I have some pics somewhere of what mine look like, and I used Mustang motor mounts. The main problem you will have is clearing the intake manifold. I am using a car intake which is lower profile, but not sure if one can be adapted to the 5.4L or not. You may have to mod your firewall to clear it.

Remember the 3v engines are fly-by-wire. That means you'll have to rig up an electric throttle. I believe that they have a returnless fuel system that you'll have to deal with too. They have limited aftermarket support and practically nothing from your truck is going to work with that drivetrain. I guess that's what makes it such an interesting project.
Personally I'd go with a 2v motor. Yeah they're a little down on power but they have a like fuel system, an adaptable throttlebody, simpler engine controls, and you can find them a bit cheaper than a 3v. Most of the performance parts from Mustangs 4.6s will work also (there are even spacers to mate a 4.6 intake to 5.4s).
You can make the swap even easier by going with a manual trans and T-case. Look for SuperDuties for this, though the physical size of the trans, and especially the Tcase, maybe a hard fit in your truck.
Sense we're bench racing I'll throw a thought for the ultimate setup. Start with a Lightning/Harley engine and mix with ported TrickFlow heads, hot cams and a Whipple upgrade. Back this with the SuperDuty 6-speed and Tcase and drop it in your truck. Now add Boggers and go mudding. After the 700+ horse blows the hell out of your 8.8 and TTB swing a locked Dana 60/80 (or Sterling) combo under the rig, and bolt on no less than 40" rubber. Take a lot of pics along the way, post them on here every few weeks and set back and enjoy everybody saying how cool your truck is.
