Help -Why is my 6.0 fuel tank liner deteriorating?
I have a 2006 6.0 Diesel F550 4x4 with very low miles and I got the shock of a lifetime when the recent loss of power was based on the fuel system being clogged with liner particles from the 40 gallon tank.....The dealer is saying its the USLD fuel.....They say they will send the tank out to be boiled and re-lined. But why is this even happening? I add fuel additives on each fill up, and stick with name brand diesel....the flue pump is likely ruined as well, and the lines needs to be cleared out as well, along with filters...Im Long Island, NY based
Has anybody heard of such a thing, and my biggest concern is what prevent this from happening again?
Any recourse with Ford, cause it sticks out like its a defect tank...never heard of it especially on less than 4 year old Trucks..
Hopefully I posted in the right forum.....Not sure if it should be in F550 forum?

happens all the time. causes are knowen to be from water in fuel, bio fuels, excessive alchol content.
odds of ford helping are slim on this. as ford did not put "defective fuel" in your fuel tank. so even under 3/36 you could be left hanging with the bill. you may be able to make a claim with your car insurance carrier for damage to the truck from bad fuel though.

Thanks for the reply.....two things I think I can almost rule out is Bio diesel and alcohol in the diesel suppy on Long Island....the water part of course cant be verified from the stations....going forward I will be using Mr. Funnel on all fill ups....
How come I dont hear this happening with GM trucks or Dodge.....why just Ford?

I have just discoverd the same problem with my 04 F450 dump, has rear mounted metal tank. Had rought runing and loss of power, changed fuel filters and fround metalic/galvanized flakes in both fuel filters. now i wonder if screens on injectors are plugged and that is why i am getting rough running. Going to pull top off tank and check inside monday.

i am having the same issue only in its early stage, my f350 mason dump has the metal tank rear mounted like yours im assuming. asked the fuel tec that was checking the fuel at my local snocco dealer, he stated to me in simple terms that the new diesel fuel has additives the reduce the emission to meet new epa laws, he explained to me that its like having salt water in your tank.... the same fuel eats the pumps at the station. i have looked on line to find an after market tank..no luck so far..started using diesel kleen to boost sulfur and cetan ratings hoping it helps..

ok just found this out today its possible the fungi can grown in the fuel system and cause these problems, the lower sulfur fuel tend to promote this growth. so if you replace the tank and do not treat the cause the same issue will occur again. a poly tank might not crumble and end up in the filters, but does the fungi cause other fuel related problems?

fuel tank
same problem, 2004 f-350, ford truck service co says that the tank manufacturer is now out of business. the new and improved tanks are backordered and every time they get a few tanks in the cable co, elec co, etc , gets them. they say they can send the tank out to get the liner stripped and then recoat with epoxy. tank repair and new fuel pump and filters cost approx 1200-1300. talking with another service co says he can get a new and improved tank for 1600 installed. just tank. so for now im changing filters at every 700 miles till i can afford the fix. ford motor co was no help. gm had the same issued and didnt help either. good luck !

I presume your fix will be to replace/clean/purge all the fuel lines, replace the HFCM and replace the tank.

If it were me, if I had an F350/450/550 chassis cab truck, I would remove the OEM tank and replace it with a TITAN fuel tank BEFORE the tank starts to self destruct!
Cheers,

Ive got 24 F450's and have swapped about 6 tanks for the never seize in the fuel filter problem. The tanks are about 1100 from ford. I just swap the tanks, clean the hfcm, and swap both filters. On all of em I never found anything in the upper filter and just swap fuel filters again next oil change.
