another oil leak - BIG plug on HPO rail this time

Well, the oil pan leak is scheduled for repair between Thanksgiving and New Years - gonna pull the engine (aaaargggghhhh!!) and hopefully fix it ONCE...

On this trip to Houston, I discover a leak on top of the engine. It took 1.5 gals of oil to get 1000mi... Not quite a gusher - yeah, I've had THOSE before - but certainly enough to make a mess of the underside of my truck and all over my 5ver!

So I finally get a chance to clean it all up, and the leak is from the large allen-head plug on the the HPO rail on front of drivers-side head. I can see some 'sealant' on this plug and I wonder why its there.

Doesn't this thing have an o-ring behind it???

I guess I'll call Bob tomorow and get new o-ring(s). Looks like I'll be here at least until the weekend for work anyway........ (and helping zooman put new injectors in his truck - actually, we pulled his old ones out this afternoon!! )

The IH parts book just shows a plug and a tube of joint sealer
I assume you are talking about the biggest plug

if it is the large plug on the end of the head get them from ford! you get new plugs and new seals, from experience if one is leaking change all 4 of them! they come in a set of 4 from ford for a reason. no sealant just clean and locktite back in with a small amount of lube on the seal

There is a big, strange shaped o-ring on each plug and requires LocTite 277 to seal it up. Allowing enough time to let the LocTite to cure is critical for a long term repair, don't rush it.

Plug O-rings

Once in a while the plug will crack during the removal process but it is rare.

I never leave home without it!! I just finished helping a forum member change his injectors - so I at least have enough tools onboard for that as well.

Seriously, I should be headed home this weekend - I can prolly swing by if ya think I can help.

Thanks Bob & Clay, I ordered the orings (from Bob) right after I typed this post last nite.

Ray, I'll be in touch!! I really appreciated your technical (and moral) support last time I had my engine out...............
