speedo repair ?

My new speedo cable went nuts today and the needle began jumping wildly. Before I could pull over and disconnect the cable the needle came off and fell down inside the speedometer.I have not yet taken it apart to check it out. If the needle just popped off the shaft might I be able to put the needle back on? Does the shaft return to 0 mph when that happens? Or does it get out of sync? Any hope for my speedometer?

Your speedometer has probably suffered from cold weather lubrication problems. I have successfully repaired mechanical proofmeters on tractors by reattaching the needle to the post. Your speedometer may or may not have suffered more damage than loss of the indicating needle. BTW, a proofmeter is a tachometer and hour meter .

Search on United Speedometer Service, they offer repair service.

It would help if you put your truck's year and model in your signature. '51 - '52 speedos are widely available new because they were used in parcel trucks up into the '60's.
