Suspension/Lift kit suggestions? '92 F-150

Hey there,

I want to lift my '92 F-150 XLT, it's a 2WD.. I just can't stand how low it is. This isn't an off-road truck, although I do use it for hunting/fishing. It's my daily driver and I only want it lifted for appearance.

A friend of mine has a simliar F-150 with 3 inches in front and 4 inches back with spacers.. He has 33's on. Here's some pics of it. <- Although his is a 4WD.

And here's mine..

I want mine to be about the same height as his. His truck is a 4wd and so when it was stock it was already higher than mine, and since mine is front-heavy I'm thinking maybe 4" in front and 3.5" in rear to level it out and lift it?

I might be totally wrong, but please feel free to suggest other ideas as I'm new to this stuff.

IF I went this route - would these work for the front?

And how about these for the rear..?

Another thing I don't know is how much I can lift it until it will need extensions/stabilizers..

Sorry I'm new to this stuff so feel free to suggest other ideas.

Thank you!

To give your truck 4" of lift you NEED to get a full kit. You cant just slap on springs and go. you also need a pitman arm and i beam/radius arm drop brackets. Look into getting a full kit, its the only way to lift your truck safely and still be able to align it.

A full suspension lift kit, correct? They seem quite expensive, I was hoping to only have to spend a few hundred

you are correct, a 3" body lift will require no extensions, just the linkage for your automatic, which isnt hard. But you never mentioned a body lift. Personally, on your 2wd that you say you want to lift for looks only, a body lift is the way to go. MUCH cheaper and easier to install than a suspension lift.

Whoops, kinda screwed up my last post there.. OK I thought that it was the other way around, suspension didn't require extensions and a body lift did. Anyways, anything higher than a 3" body lift would need more extensions in addition to the linkage, correct? Thanks!

Body lifts and suspension lifts are completely different. A body lift only lifts the body of your truck. Springs/frame/drivetrain all stay at the same height. Body lifts are good for fitting larger tires, does not help with flex/articulation/ground clearance. If you get a body lift 3" is as high as you should go, any higher with a body lift and things get unsafe.

A suspension lift replaces all components connecting the axles of the truck to the frame. Springs/pitman arm/shocks/brake lines/radius arm brackets/etc This is the way to go if you want more than 3" of lift, or if your looking for more articulation or ground clearance. Safest and easiest way to lift via suspension is with a full kit, all manufacturers make kits for these trucks, and it takes all the guesswork out of the lift.

Again, I really appreciate your help as I want to make sure I get the right thing. I will stick with the 3" body lift as I don't think I need to go any higher than that. I plan to order and have it installed within the next month, so I will be sure to post the final outcome when it's complete.

If you must mess with it, why not a leveling kit with 31" or 32" BFG AT'S or GY Duratracs?

I would suggest getting some F250 front springs and some 31 10.50s. Do not get a body lift. They are a lousy way to lift a truck.

Oh I will definitely get some larger tires and rims as well. I want to do the leveling kit, then lift it all up a few inches so it's higher up and straight across.

So you're saying I could replace the factory springs with some off a 92-96 F250 to lift the front end, then get some lift spacers for the rear? That sounds even easier to do...

If you go the spring route, you can only go about 2" without things getting complicated and expensive. For what you're doing, I'd go 2" or 3" on the body. Then if you decide you want more, you could go the f250/350 spring route for some more lift.

I just have a feeling that the f250/350 springs may not give you as much lift as you are looking for, since you're starting with a 2wd.

skyfox10,

I see you have a 2" suspension lift on your F-150 and I'm just trying to figure out how high up mine would be in comparison with a 3" body lift. Do you think it would be close to my friends at all?

And do you think I could just get the F250/350 springs instead of a leveling kit, because from what I have read, with a leveling kit the front of the truck is "nose happy" when towing. If this worked, then I could get the 3" body lift to go along with it.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks

My current truck doesn't have a 2" suspension lift. I did stack some washers under my springs on my last truck to lift the front end some. My truck is currently stock 4x4 height with 32x11.5R15 tires

One thing to consider, is that by adding heavy duty front springs to your vehicle, you are essentially leveling it out, by bringing the front end up closer to the height of the rear. In the following quote you can see how I simulated leveling my truck.

Here is a couple pics of my truck on Jack stands to kinda simulate a leveling.

I still haven't bitten the bullet yet.

Another option, is you could get some "leveling springs", then turn around and get some add-a-leaf springs for the rear. Giving you 2" all around. BCHauler did that, except he used some f250 springs in the rear as well. Unfortunately we don't see him on this forum much anymore because he wrecked his truck and now hangs out in the newer heavy duty truck forum. You could start there, it should be pretty easy and inexpensive to achieve. If you want some more after that, add a body lift.

So the truck sits like this with 31's, 844 springs in the front, and hybrid leaf spring packs made from the f150 top spring and the 4 bottom springs from the f250 springs. The top of the front fender measures 34.5" and the top of the rear fender measures 37.5" . Front bumper clearance is 18.5" to the bottom and 20.5 to the bottom of the back bumper.

Oh yeah, I only had ten minutes to take these so forgive the dirt.
