turn signal cam woes

my 1976 F100 has all turn signals working except the front driver's side. Hazards work on all four lights. Turn signal switch doesn't cancel, so I figured it was the turn signal cam that was having the issues. I looked online and ordered part number SM-9 from rockauto. It arrives and I took apart the column today, and it doesn't match. The turn signal assembly looks like the cam and the rest of the nylon assembly are one large piece. Also, the new cam I received has the pivot point closer in to the center of the column than the original, meaning the little arms at the ends aren't going to be in the same place.

Has anyone else run into this? I'm guessing it would be better to spend another $46 and just buy the whole switch with new cam, since the one I removed was all sorts of worn out. Opinions?

Also, on the original, there is a round nylon 'bushing' that fits over the column shaft, and is attached to the turn signal switch assembly. There are two holes and one of them has a small metal pin with a spring behind it, and the pin protrudes out from the hole. The other small hole doesn't have the pin. What is this part and what does it do?

Next, there is a rubber or poly bushing that is on the inside of the 'bushing' listed above. does anyone know where to get a replacement? Mine is shot.

also, inside the shift collar on the AT column, there is a little spring that goes behind the detent for the column shift lever (basically, the spring that provides resistance when you pull the column towards you to shift it) that has broken in half. Does anyone have a part number for this spring, or where to buy a replacement?

nope, that was the first place I looked. Checked broncograveyard, dearborn and several other places. Checked every parts store I could find, nothing. Looks like for the spring I'll just have to buy one from a hardware store and cut it down. Unfortunately I don't think I'll find one that is the same spring rate, but it'll be better than nothing I suppose. I wasn't sure if anyone knew of / had a part number for a replacement, as I know Ford discontinued them a long time ago.

For the turn signal switch, I went ahead and bought a new one through Advance Auto Parts this evening. With a $10 discount, it was $43 and it'll be here in about a day. Figured that was better than trying to cobble together the original. This is a job I only want to do once.

well, after solving the detent spring problem, I went to open and install the replacement turn signal switch. guess what: it doesn't match. Turns out, the column is a 1979, so the switch is completely different. Now I get to order one from Rock Auto, as the local places either don't carry it, or they want $140 for it.

That price sounds about right.

For $43, all my turn signals and hazards work great! I also dropped a few coins at LMC and bought new column bearings, sleeves, lock-rings, shifter insulator, etc. Column feels like new, signals work great, and I'm happy! I had the original wheel, but was missing the horn button. Everywhere I looked, a replacement was around $120, so instead I bought a Grant 457 wheel and adapter, for $105 shipped to my door. Installed it and couldn't be happier!
