Criuse Control, 4 W/D Auto Hubs
Hello Everyone,
Newbie. After looking over the forums, found a lot of folks having similar problems that I was having. #1 auto locking hubs, #2 no cruise or horn. Just wanted to give an update. Full size 1994 Bronco with 218,160 miles, EB edition with the 5.8l. Replaced the auto hubs today with Warn manual hubs. Replaced the "clock spring", (wiring assembly, Ford genuine part #F4TZ-14A664-B on the steering column.) Had already checked all fuses and replaced a relay. Replaced the clock spring myself, had the hubs done at a 4 w/d specialty shop. Clockspring $115 out the door, hubs, $140. I now have a horn and criuse, this will cut down on my tickets! My auto hubs were in very good shape with the miles that were on them. A lot of negative attitudes on the auto hubs. Just wanted to share my experience with auto hubs to help someone make theirs last longer. First up the clockspring. Thanks to 86F150302 for a great video of the procedure. Took me about one hour and fifteen minutes, two beers, from start to finish. The hub care. I bought this Bronco with 15,000 miles on it. I have put 203,000 miles on it with NO hub problems, until recently. Never even went into them to grease them. Based on the attitudes on auto hubs, when they finally needed attention, I followed the masses, and went manual. But I want to share what I did to make mine last so long without problems. I would use the 4 w/d on dirt roads every month or two to lubricate the seals and move the grease. EACH and every time I used 4 w/d, after going back to 2 w/d, I would put it in reverse and back up 20 to 30 feet. I did not use 4 w/d to find problems, I used it to get out of problems. I am a hunter, 4 wheeler enthusiast, fisherman, and traveler. I love nothing better than pulling a Chevy out of the mud. I did not go into deep water often, but do have some mud on the inside of my hood. So, do you go auto or manual? I would still be auto if I knew before what I know now. But, time will tell, if I'll be happier with manual. Those Warn hubs do look good though! Thanks for your time, I know it's long, just wanted to give back. Thanks, Mark
