Why are 460s so hard to find?

Is it just me, or are 460 engines hard to find? I've been looking for one to put in my '77 F100 with no luck. Junkyards dont even have cores. I thought these were fairly common. Can anybody give me some ideas about where to look maybe online? I live in Mississippi. Just looking for a stock engine.

They are out there, sometimes you have to buy an old car or truck to get one of them. I found all of mine 3 on craigslist, one I had to get from the next state over, we just put it in the back bed and drove home with it.You could look in near by cities/states as well using the search word "ford 460" in auto parts/ or in cars trucks as well...check this out, good luck! also, its best to search daily, or weekly at least.

460: Standard equipment in 1968/78 Lincoln's & 1969/78 Continental Mark III, IV & V / 1972/76 Thunderbird.

Optional in 1973/78 full sized Ford's & Merc's / 1973/76 Torino/Montego / 1974/76 Cougar / 1973/79 F100/350 2WD / 1975/96 Econoline / 1983/96 F250/350 2WD/4WD.

CAVEAT EMPTOR: Let the buyer beware. Some 1973/74 Ford/Merc's came with 429's, as did 1968/72 Ford/Merc's and 1968/71 Thunderbird's.

The 429 looks exactly the same as a 460. The bore is the same (4.36"). The stroke is not the same. 429: 3.59" / 460: 3.65"

The block casting number is the same for 1971/74 429's and 1971/78 and some 1979 460's: D1VE-6015-AB, -AB1, -AB2.

No 460's in Passenger Cars after 1978.

Ford changed the 460 mid-year 1979, the block casting number is D9TE-6015-AB. This engine uses a weighted spacer, the prior 460's do not. The flywheel and harmonic balancer are specific to this engine.

an A460 block isnt all that bad either, and depending on what your trying to build, you may be money ahead.
but i agree..I own 3 of them(2 460's, 1 429) each were complete and running, and all of them bought for under $500 collectively. They're still around fairly cheap.
