V10 towing mpg improvements

So are you going to stay with your larger tires? I don't think you need the smaller ones for towing now that you've done gears.

Interested to hear about your mileage gains after the gear swap as I am contemplating changing gears in my Excursion as well. I was looking at 4.30's just to retain the O/D on hills and pull my boat a little better but did not want to go too big and increase the rpm's too much when not towing and actually loose mileage. Currently getting about 10avg, 12-13 on the road and 7-8 towing. I am running 3.73's with 315/75/16's and the V10 have the Banks Power pack on it, header, y-tube replacement and cat delete, got another 1 or so on the road and more pickup eliminating the cat, but now with having to run 87 octane, lost my mileage I had before from running super.

4x4?
Is that a low profile (crawl or seriously stoop) or high profile 5th wheel?
If high profile and 4x4, that sounds right. All that windage and frontal area is brutal on fuel economy. If you can slow down to 60, you may break 7.
As engine wears in, it will eek up more.
Ignore those folks claiming 20 mpg when towing with their diesels.... My honest diesel driving friends report they rarely exceed 11, and are usually closer to 9. One of the truck mags just compared the 2011 diesels from the big 3 towing smallish toy haulers - and these were bumper pulls with much less frontal area than 5th wheel. All were getting around 9 mpg.

Like to know how he came at that mpg towing seeing that there are too many factors to figure in. But what ever it takes to make the sale is the sales person motto.

^^ The dealers here in the OC are the same way. I was hunting for a V10, they all kept telling me that the V10's are hard to find due to poor gas mileage. I would have figured that if these things sucked so bad the market would be flooded with gassers and not the absolute poop-load of 6.0 PSD overflowing the lots.
Good to see you are getting better mileage and performance. My buddy has an early V10, and I'm passing on this info to him. As for my 09' V10, after 5Star upgraded me with a tuner and intake, my avg. mpg's have gone up from 7.3 in town to 9.4, and on highway to 11.5. Thats with 8" lift, 37' muds, 87 econo tune, and no gear swap yet. No towing miles yet to report, or 89 performance tune mpg's yet.
