What Do You Want from the New Super Duty?
The new F-150 is a pretty good truck, but for those that want to get real work done they need a Super Duty. We’ve known for awhile that a new Super Duty is coming, and that it’ll share the aluminum body construction that debuted on the F-150. We also know it’ll be loaded with technology. But what do you want to see?
The lighter-weight truck should see an improvement in towing capacity and payload. Maxing out a current Super Duty would require a CDL, but expect even more towing grunt from the new truck. Maybe 33,000 to 34,000 lbs?
Also expect more power, and more importantly, torque from the Power Stroke diesel engine. Since Ram just pushed the 900 lb-ft barrier with their Cummings diesel, we totally expect Ford to trump that number. I would be surprised if it was 950 or more, but 910-920 lb-ft seems like it could be a good target.
Regardless, Ford will want to make a solid “Best in Class” claim with the 2017 Super Duty so that there is no dispute.
We also know the new Super Duty will have as many as 7 cameras, depending on configuration. Expect the 360° camera treatment, plus possibly a camera for the bed to assist with hooking up a fifth-wheel or gooseneck trailer.
Finally, we wouldn’t be surprised if Pro Trailer Backup Assist is an option. Now that they’ve completed the research and development on it, they might as well make it available on everything.
