What are the Other 3 SUVs Coming From Ford?
Even though Ford won’t officially confirm the existence of a new Bronco, we know for sure that Ford plans on introducing four new SUVs in the next four years. While we’re all assuming one of them is the new Ford Bronco, what are the other three?
According to Ford’s Mark LaNeve, VP of Sales, Service and Support, these will be new nameplate vehicles that Ford currently doesn’t compete it. They aren’t just going to be refreshed versions of current models. So, what could they possibly be?
The subcompact SUV and CUV segment are growing quite rapidly. Vehicles like the Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V are selling well, and Ford doesn’t currently offer a vehicle in this class. The Escape, built atop a Focus platform, is bigger than these vehicles.
The EcoSport, with a few changes to make it pass federal regulations here in the United States, would be an easy and smart move. Ford believes that even if gas prices go back up, people will gravitate towards smaller SUVs instead of getting back into cars. That would make the EcoSport a strong future seller.
When you need to go bigger than an Expedition, the Excursion was the answer. With cheap fuel prices and people upsizing their vehicles in droves, there would be people who’d want something bigger and badder than an Explorer or an Expedition. That’s where the new Excursion would come in.
While pure speculation on our part, the new Excursion would retain a body-on-frame architecture, but most likely run the 3.5L EcoBoost as a power plant. Since we know Ford can get bigger numbers out of the EcoBoost V6, it’s likely the Excursion would carry more horsepower to move the weight around, and retain good towing figures.
Unknown Sport Activity Coupe
The last possible vehicle is purely a guess on our part, since Ford already competes in many of the tradition sport utility and crossover segments. But Mercedes-Benz and BMW have both jumped on the sport activity coupe bandwagon. A sport activity coupe is basically a less-practical SUV that’s designed to look more like a coupe than a hatchback. While most still retain the 5-door architecture, interior storage space is compromised to make the vehicle have a more sleek appearance.
They sell well for the Germans, so Ford might try to get in on that action.
The truth of the matter is that we really don’t know what other possibilities are coming from Ford in terms of new SUVs. Heck, we can’t even say for certain that a new Bronco is in the pipeline, even if our Magic 8 Ball is pointing to “Yes.” What we do know is the rumor and speculation is only going to grow stronger as we get closer to the launch of these news vehicles, and we’ll be sure to bring you all the latest as they develop.
