Personal Best: ’03 F-150 Lightning Runs High 12s
Ford Driver’s ‘Record’ Results Include a Race Track, Burnin’ Rubber and a Lightning F-150 with a 93-Octane Engine Tune
This week’s “Truckin Fast Wednesday” video features a Ford SVT Lightning F-150. Watch it making a few blasts down the quarter mile with “record” results, which we expect refer to a personal best for this driver and his truck.
In stock form, a 2003 generation Ford F-150 Lightning is capable of scooting through the quarter mile in the mid-to-high 13-second range. This is thanks to the supercharged 5.4L Triton V8 with 380 horsepower and 450lb-ft of torque. The 2003 Ford Lightning has been fitted with a handful of modifications to increase the output of that blown V8. These include a cold air intake, a smaller supercharger pulley, a dual pass heat exchanger, a catback exhaust system and a 93-octane engine tune from Jake at Lamotta Performance.
We don’t know how much power this 2003 Lightning F-150 is making. But it is making enough power to climb from the mid-13s down into the high 12s – 12.77, to be exact.
This video actually shows this 2003 Ford SVT Lightning F-150 making a pair of quarter mile runs. On the first pass, the F-150 runs a 12.773 at 107.67 mph. We can only assume that this is his best ET. On the second run, he runs a 12.806 at 107.79 mph, which we can guess is his best trap speed.
In each of two runs, it sounds like the supercharged F-150 spins the tires a bit coming out. And with the absence of good tires on his mod list at the end of the video, we have to wonder if this F-150 might not be racing on some sort of street tire. This would account for the balmy 1.9X 60 foot times. So, if the owner of this Lightning could get away from the line a bit cleaner, there are almost certainly better times in his future.
In the meantime, crank up your speakers and enjoy!
