THROWBACK THURSDAY The 1977 Ford F-150 Explorer
The Ford Explorer is best known today for being one of the most popular models in the history of the sport utility vehicle segment, but back in the late 1970s, Explorer was a special premium upgrade package for the Ranger trimline of the Ford F-100 and F-150 pickup.
This week’s Throwback Thursday video takes a look at an ad for the 1977 Explorer, which was a true luxury pickup before the phrase luxury pickup was ever stated with any seriousness.
The 1977 Ford F-150 Explorer came with unique exterior paint options, exterior stripes, a color matched interior, hubcaps, power steering, cruise control and air conditioning – all of which were available with a $200 discount when this ad first aired back in 1977. The commercial ends by saying it best – “The 1977 Ford Explorer. One beautiful buy.”
