Mom Car No More: ‘The Stig’ Takes On the 2019 Ford Edge ST

Stunt driver Ben Collins takes two wild rides in Ford Performance’s fast & furious new video, On the Edge

“Ford Performance in an SUV? That’s gonna be wicked!” says Ben Collins, who was just expecting another day at work. It’s important to note that an average day at work for Collins includes racing, test-driving, road-testing, and stunt-driving for some of the world’s greatest cars and trucks. But on this day he unexpectedly finds himself behind the wheel of the 2019 Ford Edge ST. And this SUV makes him holler.

The former Top Gear star and motorsports champ is just chilling with his cup of joe, waiting for his ride. His set driver arrives, oblivious to who Collins is, and chats Collins up while screeching and speeding along, “What are you? What’s your gig? Ever been on tv?” Collins, charmingly humble says, “Yeah, um, that kind of stuff.” The driver beams, “We have a lot in common, we’re both professional drivers.”

He rolls up to set, where the director walks him by a line-up of cool cars: A GT, a Raptor, a Mustang. But they keep walking by until they reach the 2019 Ford Edge GT.

‘It’s the kind of thing you’d expect from Ford Performance. But in an SUV? It’s really a bold step.’

The 2019 Edge ST has had some work done. It’s got a sportier new look, and frankly, the aesthetic looks cooler and tougher. The 2019 Edge ST boasts a 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBost engine that produces 335 horsepower with 380 lb.-ft. of torque. The Edge also has the ST-tuned sport suspension, stop-start engine, Sport Mode, quick-shifting 8-speed transmission, and all wheel drive. New LED headlights are another upgrade to the exterior.

Collins hops in the Edge and puts it to work. The new Edge handles beautifully; the upgrades in handling, braking, suspension, and engine performance are at the heart of this redesign, and it shows. On the road the engine roars, making you forget that this is an SUV. No, really. This is an aggressive Edge we haven’t seen. At one point Collins enthuses “Woo hoo! Feel that power!” And he takes the Edge through the paces, utilizing the Edge’s many features. The power will not be ignored, sounding like it would be at very much at home on a racing track.

The verdict from Collins? “It’s the kind of thing you’d expect from Ford Performance. But in an SUV? It’s really a bold step.” The Edge ST shows that it’s got the performance and muscle to be taken seriously. The 2019 Ford Edge ST will be coming out this summer.
