REPORT: We’re Getting the Ford EcoSport in the U.S. in 2017

Ford EcoSport

At the Detroit Auto Show back in January, Ford’s CEO Mark Fields announced there would be four new SUVs coming in the next couple of years from his brand. Then, at the Chicago Auto Show, Ford stated that they would be products that don’t already exist for sale in the United States. We believe the EcoSport is one of them, and a report out of India seems to confirm that.

While we gravitated towards the Bronco when Ford said their SUVs were new makes, we did start to wonder what the other three would be. The EcoSport makes a ton of sense, because the subcompact crossover segment is getting pretty popular, and Ford doesn’t play in the market. The EcoSport would compete with the Mazda CX-3 and the Honda HRV. It would give buyers an option of a less-expensive alternative to the Ford Escape.

The vehicle is currently produced in India, and according to the Economic Times of India, would be shipped to the United States upon the mid-cycle refresh in the calendar year 2017. If that’s the case, that means the Michigan Assembly Plant wouldn’t be used for it, keeping it free for the Bronco and Ranger we’re expecting.
