Racecar Driver Martin Barkey has Merciless Desert Romp with Rented Ford Expedition
You have rented a 4-wheel drive Ford Expedition, you are professional racecar driver Martin Barkey, and you have access to an expansive desert – what do you do?
Answer: Pin it.
Martin Barkey, who is in his third season of road racing and currently driving full-time for Mantella Autosport, found himself testing a desert race buggy in Johnson Valley, CA readying it for King of the Hammers Race Week. We are not sure what prompted him to grab the keys of his rented Ford Expedition and hit the “whoops” at speed, but we’re glad he did. We’re also glad he had the forethought to grab a camera and have it filmed.
From this short, fifteen second video, we can learn two things –
1. Never buy a used rental car.
2. The Ford Expedition can take a savage beating like a champ.
Okay, number two is more of an assumption. We don’t know what damage this Expedition could have incurred with 5,700 pounds of weight smashing down on the suspension and underbody – especially after getting a good three feet of air. But lesson number one – it holds true, always.
