2016 F-150 Makes Trailer Backup Easier Than Ever
If you haul a trailer on a regular basis, maneuvering it and backing it up are probably second nature to you, but for the rest of us, we could use a little bit of help. That’s where the new Pro Trailer Backup Assist on the 2016 Ford F-150 comes in. You simply tell the truck which way you want the trailer to go, and the truck does the rest!
Because everything on the new F-150 is electronically controlled, including the throttle and the steering, Ford engineers are able to come up with creative new solutions to some common truck problems.
Working in concert with the rear-view camera, the driver uses a rotary knob to indicate which direction they want the trailer to go, and the steering is handled for the driver automatically. The computer will also limit the speed of the vehicle to improve comfort and control.
The 2015 F-150 introduced a dynamic hitching system making it easier to hook up to the trailer. The 2016 version makes it easier to back up that trailer. Integrated brake controllers and other technology help make it easier, and safer, to tow the trailer.
But would you expect less from a truck so intelligent that it can parallel park itself? The Pro Trailer Backup Assist is a feature I’m really looking forward to trying on the 2016 F-150. If it’s as intuitive as Ford claims, sign me up for the feature on my next truck!
The 2016 F-150 will be available in late summer.
