Modern powerplant, ease of upgrading, and years of improvement give the 2019 Ranger a wheel-up on the competition.

Time and time again, everyone is singing the praises of the 2019 Ford Ranger, making the new midsize pickup one of Ford’s biggest hits for the 2019 model year. And while its years-long absence certainly made hearts grow fonder, the experience gained from its global trek solidifies the Ranger as one of the best mid-size trucks around.

You don’t have to take our word for it. Outside says the Ranger’s total package “is just much more convincing than the Tacoma or Colorado, and probably more practical than the Jeep Gladiator.”

According to Outside, the Ranger’s years of testing and real-world experience have helped the truck be the best it can be, which makes for a better truck overall, especially among tuners and the aftermarket.

Another plus? The Ranger’s 2.3-liter EcoBoost and 10-speed automatic. The former’s power “kicks in down low, where a truck’s power band belongs,” while the V6s of other, lesser trucks “are thrashy and frustrating to use” due to their sedan-based origins. Plus, the turbo gives the turbo-four plenty of air to tackle higher elevations.

The 10-speed, meanwhile, is “the best available transmission in any vehicle right now,” thanks to its fast shifts and ability to pick the right gear for the right situation, delivering on both fuel economy and performance.

Inside the Ranger, “you sit upright, as the truck gods intended.” Outside adds that you’ll be able drive for 800 miles in a single day without needing to find a chiropractor the next day.

And of course, the Ranger is incredibly customizable, from a simple tune boosting the EcoBoost to 312 horses and 369 lb-ft torque, to easily swapping out the front and rear bumpers for sturdier, multi-functional units. Plus, the FX4 off-road package is available on all models, with two-wheel-drive units gaining their own FX2 variant

All in all, the Ranger does it again: Win the hearts and minds of new and old fans alike with its off-road capability, excellent fuel economy, and simply being the best midsize truck around today.
