Mega Millions Winner Plans to Buy Ford Raptor as First Purchase

Michael J. Weirsky nearly missed out on $273-million payday, and a Raptor, after leaving his winning ticket behind for a day.

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you’d buy with your winnings? A brand new F-150 Limited? A 2019 Ranger? An F-450 Limited? All of the above?

If you’re Michael J. Weirsky of New Jersey, you’d opt for a Ford Raptor. Philadelphia FOX affiliate WTXF-TV was there for the news conference with Weirsky, who won $273 million from the New Jersey Lottery by playing Mega Millions.

Weirsky Future Ford Raptor Owner circa March 2019

“First thing I’m doing is buying my new pickup, [a] Ford Raptor,” said Weirsky. “It’s something I wanted for a long time, and I’m gonna get it. After that, I’m basically locked in to what my lawyer and other people that I got working for me tell me I can do.”

Weirsky almost didn’t get his Raptor, though. The winner went through “the typical cell phone deal” while purchasing his Mega Millions tickets at his local convenience store. He was paying too much attention to the phone and left the tickets behind. One of the workers found the tickets, then held them until he returned. The rest is history. And a dream come true.

“The first night, when I actually knew I won, my Sunday night, I just couldn’t fall asleep,” Weirsky said. “I was up pacing my room, wondering what I could do, when I was gonna get my money, what I was gonna do with that money. I knew [what truck I wanted]. I already went and looked at the truck, so I know that’s gonna be there… It’s still sinking in yet.”

Weirsky said he would be taking a lump sum, which is around $159 million after taxes. A fully kitted-out Raptor is chump change in comparison, coming in at around $75,000 if the right boxes are ticked off.
