How the Ford F-Series Maintains Market Dominance
Ford’s F-Series has maintained its grip on the truck market for decades. And the reason why is quite simple.
In the competitive world of business, creating a best-selling product is hard enough. It takes meticulous market research, the right people, a stroke of luck, and maybe even some creative voodoo. But as fast as a product can take over the world, it can also disappear in the blink of an eye. Yes, as hard as creating success is, generating sustained success is ten times harder. All of which makes the Ford F-Series and its continued dominance of the sales charts even more impressive.
But few ever stop and ask the question of how the Ford F-Series became so consistently dominant in the first place. What is it about this line of pickups that keeps us coming back? To the point where Ford doesn’t even want to build cars anymore? Well, according to Co.Design, the answer is quite simple. It’s a combination of “Ford’s emphasis on original design–together with its frequent upgrades.”
You see, it all started post-World War II, when the F-Series debuted. Ford offered up a whopping eight different models, which filled pretty much every customer’s needs. Their cabs were spacious and comfy, quiet, and luxurious. Which was quite unusual for trucks in those days. From then until now, Ford has stayed ahead by constantly innovating, upgrading and redesigning. Pretty simple, huh?
Well those efforts have clearly paid off, and more than in just sales wins. As Co.Design points out, it’s thought that 90% of Ford’s global profits come from the F-Series. The F-150 brand is also thought to be worth more than the entire company. So while other brands continue to drag their feet on innovation and making brave decisions like killing off cars and switching to aluminum, they continue to also lag behind the legendary F-Series.
