Ford Super Duty F-550: Ultimate Off-Road Adventure Rig
Nearly four decades of traveling the globe led this adventure-seeking couple to build the ultimate Super Duty!
The sport of overlanding is a relatively new phenomenon. But for many, the concept of traveling long distances off-road in a vehicle outfitted to handle any kind of situation is nothing new. That includes Gary Wescott and his wife Monika Mühlebach Wescott, who have spent the last 39 years traveling the globe on foot and on four wheels. The incredible truck you see before you is their fifth Ford, this time a Super Duty F-550.
The Wescotts have obviously learned a lot about what kind of vehicle works best over their decades of traversing rough terrain. After all, getting stranded in the middle of the Afghani desert or frozen tundra of Siberia isn’t exactly something you want to be faced with. “Through years of experience, we’ve systematically found out what works,” Gary says. “In the places we go, reliability becomes all-important! This is not a vacation.”
The culmination of those many years of experience is this – the Super Duty the Wescotts refer to as the “Turtle V,” a 1999 F-550 outfitted with a custom Tortuga Expedition Camper. The 7.3-liter Power Stroke-powered pickup shares a cab with the F-250, but sports a Dana 135 rear differential and hefty 17,500 GVWR. The suspension has been further fortified with National Spring packs and dual Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks.
