Does Ford Need a Jeep Renegade Competitor?
When it comes to off-roading, Ford makes some vehicles that are definitely capable of the task. But there’s only one Ford vehicle that has the cachet amongst the common people as an off-road vehicle, and that is the Ford Raptor.
Jeep has made a name for itself by building off-road vehicles of different types and varieties. The Jeep Renegade, their smallest product offering, is coming early next year. Small utility vehicles are popular; does it make sense for Ford to build a competitor to the Renegade?
The Renegade slots in below the Cherokee in the Jeep lineup. The Cherokee’s Ford rival is the Escape. Fiat Chrysler is betting on smaller utilities, bringing both the Fiat 500X and the Renegade to market.
Compact utilities have been selling really well lately; partly due to people wanting the extra functionality over a car, and partly because they are more fuel efficient than their larger counterparts. I would think the Fiesta platform is versatile enough to convert into a Renegade fighter.
The Ford version might not have the off-road chops of the Trailhawk Renegade, but most Renegades sold will be the on-road only version, and that’s where the Ford could shine. Sync 3 can match or beat the Jeep in connectivity, and a tuned 1.0L EcoBoost could make a heck of an engine for it.
Do you think Ford needs a smaller utility to compete with the likes of the Renegade? Sound off in the forum.>>
