Ford F-150 V8 Defeats Chevrolet Silverado at the Ike Gauntlet
We’re all pretty big fans of the Coyote V8 here. I mean, who wouldn’t be? It’s in everything from the latest Ford Mustang to the Ford F-150. It’s a peach of an engine. But how does it compare to the other V8s on the block from the competition? It recently was tested and compared to a Chevrolet Silverado with the 5.3L V8, and the results were clear; the Coyote V8 is the winner.
TFLtruck has a grueling test for their trucks called the Ike Gauntlet. It’s all explained in the video, including the scoring, but basically they drive a fully-loaded truck up the Eisenhower Tunnel on Interstate 70 in Colorado. It’s a tough test, especially when you factor in altitude and grade.
Out of a possible 100 points, the F-150 Lariat with the 5.0L V8 scored 77 points. The 6-speed automatic seemed well suited for this particular application, and engine braking helped tremendously on the downhill portion. For comparison, the Chevrolet Silverado with the 5.3L scored a total of 66 out of 100 points.
