Making a ’78 Ford F-150 Even Tougher

Why Stick With a Two-Wheel Drive F-150, When 4×4 Can Be More Fun?

Things are rarely perfect, as you all know. Whether it is certain things in your home, life, or your truck, life is all about imperfection. But, that doesn’t mean we can’t strive for it! Perhaps that’s what drove proud Ford truck owner Lukas, who is the focus of this week’s “Build Up!,” to go 4×4 or bust!

Ford Truck Enthusiast forum member Lukas2449 is currently working hard to get his ride to his own version of “perfect.” The truck is a 1978 Ford F-150 Ranger, and you’re sure to love it. The rig has a 300 cubic inch straight-six motor, a three-speed transmission with overdrive, and is a two-wheel drive. That’s only temporary, though. Or at least that’s what Lukas2449 says.

The Washington State resident wants his ride to be a 4×4 truck. Many of you know this feeling, as oftentimes you quickly realize that a 2WD just isn’t what you want or need. (This is especially true if you live in the Northwest.) Lukas2449 decided to get to work to achieve this, however, and is pursuing a 4×4 conversion on his ride!

“I have read all around these forums that doing the conversion on the 2WD frame is absolutely time consuming and requires a ton of modification, which leads me to doing a body swap which I see is the better way,” writes Lukas2449 in the forum.

Instead of modifying his current ride, he chose to pick up another vehicle and perform a body swap. This other ride is a 1976 Ford F-150 4×4 with a 390 cubic inch motor. In theory, the two should match up pretty good, but we all know what happens once it’s time to get the job done.
