Full Speed Ahead: Ford Edge ST is the Ultimate Performance SUV
There is no better way to test out the Edge ST’s capabilities than to put a NASCAR race driver behind the wheel.
While we usually focus on Ford trucks, we couldn’t help but be blown away by the Ford Edge ST. The ST trim was developed and tuned by the Ford Performance Team. And at the heart of this cool machine is a track-worthy racer. We could tell you all about how this vehicle rocks the road, but isn’t it better to see it in action?
Ford Performance brought in NASCAR race driver Joey Logano to put the Edge ST through some very punishing paces. Logano knows his Fords. He’s raced on the Ford Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series team, as well as the Ford Xfinity Series team; and done many turns in a Mustang or a Fusion.
“The first two things I think of when I walk up to the car is, I want it to look aggressive,” Logano says in a voiceover as he opens the garage door and surveys the Edge ST. “I want it to have that performance look. And then I think of the power–I want to know what’s under the hood. And then the third thing is the sound of it, that rumble or that cool sound that sounds like performance, sounds like speed.”
As if to prove a point, Logano revs the Edge, and it roars to life. The 2.7-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBost engine is delivering with 335 horsepower with 380 lb-ft. of torque.
Logano takes it out on the road and opens it up. He shows off how sharp and responsive the Edge ST is, and does so by putting it through the paces. The Edge ST drifts and takes corners with ease. Seriously, this is an SUV?
Wanting to see how the Edge measures up against some other STs, they have a race. As the Edge speeds ahead, it is no contest. “I’m blown away by how much faster it was,” Logano exclaims before he laughs.
On the road, Logano gets a feel for the full capabilities beyond the track. He is impressed with the balance of the vehicle. Logano, a father and husband, appreciates that this can be a practical ride for the whole family, but is still a cool and performance-oriented ride.
It’s important to note that the Edge is the fastest ST Ford has ever built, hitting 0-60 in under 6 seconds. This is not exactly what we think of with SUVs, which we’re much more inclined to associate with dropping the kids off at school and Costco runs.
There’s a new SUV in town, and it’s pretty badass.
