Will Ford’s New Carbon Fiber Wheels Fit the Raptor?
Whether it’s heavy duty trucks or high-performance supercars, weight and strength are at the very top of the list when it comes to material characteristics. Ford’s new carbon fiber wheels represent exactly that.
The quest for lightweight and strong car parts brought us the first mass-produced carbon fiber wheels on the Shelby GT350R, but it’s the new Ford GT supercar that will bring to market the first non-painted carbon fiber wheels from the blue oval.
The new GT wheels will offer the next generation in carbon fiber wheels, with an advanced resin and fiber technology that gives wheel designers more freedom for creative designs, while also showing off the material’s weave in all of its glory. Customers can choose their wheels with a gloss clear coat or matte carbon fiber finish, therefore complying with high-demands for vehicle customization.
While Ford hasn’t realized exact weight specifications, they did state the carbon fiber wheels will offer a 2 lbs. weight savings over the GT’s 8.5 x 20 in./front, and 11.5 x 20 in./rear ultra-lightweight aluminum wheels, and reduce inertia by 25 percent.
If you ask me, it’s only a matter of time until this technology trickles down to other Ford Performance vehicles such as the ford F-150 Raptor.
Pricing on a set of these bad boys isn’t available, but I’d say tens of thousands would be quite accurate.
