This video takes us back to 1983, when Ford was bragging about having the most powerful and most efficient six cylinder engine in the half ton truck segment – just like they have recently.

Of course, back in 1983, the F-150 with the most powerful six cylinder engine in the segment only offered 125 horsepower, but that same F-150 with the 4.9L, 300 cubic inch inline-6 engine was able to hit an impressive figure of 30 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg combined.

Really, the fuel economy numbers for the entry level 1983 Ford F-150 are pretty solid considering the lack of technology back then.

In fact, the 1983 F-150 offered better highway fuel economy than most of the trucks in today’s half ton segment, including the modern F-150 lineup.

This goes to show that even back in 1983, the F-150 was a leader in a variety of categories for the half ton truck segment.
