Eyes-and-Ears Tour of the 2017 Ford GT
It’s been almost 10 years since Ford was last in the exotic car world, but boy did it make the 2017 Ford GT visually and sonically worth the wait. (Too bad it won’t be officially out for a while.)
YouTuber Shmee150 went to this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit. There, he got a lens-ful of Blue Oval badassery.
The carbon-fiber American supercar looks great in photos and even sexier when your eyes glide over its landscape of curves and angles on a virtual walkaround. The last GT was visually striking, but this new one trumps it.
It bears a resemblance to its predecessor while simultaneously looking more European and more dramatic. To me, it’s the best of both worlds. Ford’s designers made some bold moves on their sketch pads and they were the right ones.
The 2017 version of Ford’s tribute to its success in the 1960s Le Mans scene also trumps the mid-2000s GT in terms of power.
Whereas that car’s supercharged 5.4-liter V8 made 550 horsepower, the next mid-engine destroyer from D-Town will pump out more than 600 – from an EcoBoost V6.
According to Ford, the 3.5-liter, twin-turbo six is “based on the same race-proven engine architecture serving Ford’s IMSA Daytona Prototype endurance racing efforts.” It’ll be pushing all of its horses through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
It also makes the new GT sound as if it’s slowly rising out of the depths of hell to rip the souls out of Ferraris and Porsches. The 2017 model’s going to torture us all with anticipation until it lands in showrooms in the second half of next year.
