NYC Auto Show Special: The Cool Ford Rides of the NYPD

By -

With nearly 9,000 machines in the NYPD fleet, there’s bound to be a sweet Ford, or two.

Ford Truck Enthusiasts is headed to the New York International Auto Show this week, so we thought it’d be a great opportunity to bring you up to speed on all things Ford, and NYPD.

The New York Police Department is the largest police force in the US, and has nearly 9,000 vehicles at its disposal. With over 35,000 officers, the NYPD has divisions that range from counter-terrorism to air support, which means employ a wide variety of machinery.

Here are some of the coolest Fords the New York City’s boys in blue use to fight criminals.

The Obvious Ones

When Ford stopped making the Crown Victoria P71 for police departments in 2011, the NYPD moved toward newer, more powerful machines. Currently they use the Taurus Interceptor, and Explorer Interceptor Utility, which beat out the Fusion to become the department’s car of choice for Radio Motor Patrol cars.

Light-Rescue Trucks

The NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit (ESU) encompasses SWAT and other rescue operation units. The light-rescue vehicle of choice is the Ford F-550, which has been thoroughly upgraded by Odyssey Specialty Vehicles. The heavy-duty truck comes equipped to handle medical, water, and forced-entry rescues. And when the going gets tough, the 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel is there to get out of sticky situations.

Powerful Cars For Highway Speeders

The Crown Victoria P71 may not be the go-to vehicle anymore, but the department still uses it for some of its highway patrol units. With a 4.6-liter V8 under the hood, they can run down the majority of speeders around Manhattan.

The Undercover Vehicles

Drive around a city as jam-packed as New York City, and you’re bound to see a variety of unmarked sedans and SUVs. The majority of these vehicles belong to the NYPD, with the others belonging to various federal agencies. Unmarked Ford Fusions, Ford Taurus Interceptors, Ford Explorer Interceptors, and Ford Escapes make up a large portion of the unmarked vehicles.

The Van To Stop Explosions

The NYPD is composed of many specialized units, one of which is the bomb squad. The Ford E-350 is currently one of the vehicles the police department uses, and is loaded with tools and equipment to help disarm, or keep things from going boom.
