Throwback Thursday: Classic Ford F-100 Radio Commercial with Merle Haggard
Back in 1976, the country music legend wrote a catchy jingle for the Ford F-100 pickup.
This week’s Throwback Thursday video comes to us from the diehardhankfan YouTube channel and it features Merle Haggard singing about the 1976 Ford F-100. We showcase lots of classic advertisements, but this is our first radio spot – paired with images of Merle Haggard and F-Series trucks from that era – making this our most unique Throwback Thursday to date.
Merle Haggard for Ford
While the person who runs this YouTube channel is more of a Hank Williams fan, he has offered up a Ford truck radio commercial for the 1976 F-100. Haggard was a huge country music star back then and rather than having him appear in a commercial, the Motor Company had him write and sing a song about their popular pickups. The jingle is about 25 seconds long and it is exactly what you would expect from a country music song about pickup trucks in the mid-1970s.
After the jingle, the narrator talks about the 1976 Ford F-100, with its impressive fuel economy ratings being 33% better than the competition. The commercial ends with another 10 seconds of Merle jamming away about the ‘pickup-driving man’.
Radio Commercial on YouTube
Of course, since this commercial was made for radio, there was no video footage, so when the YouTuber uploaded the sound clip to the video network, he needed to add some visuals. As a result, the video is comprised of classic pictures of Merle Haggard and pictures of stock and modified Ford trucks from the 1970s.
Really, the video footage plays second fiddle to this classic country music jingle about the Ford truck and the people who drive them.
