Two-Wheel Drive or Four-Wheel Drive? That Is the Question

Undecided? Behold a comprehensive analysis of the pros and cons of each drivetrain.

As a kid you dream of owning a truck, and such truck typically traverses rough terrain and imaginary obstacles such as deep mud pits and small mountains. As an adult, however, you begin to realize that when you spend your own money on a truck, you have to consider different factors into account. Sometimes that 4×4 beast isn’t the most practical, efficient, or economical truck for you, and owning a more basic two-wheel drive is the way to go.

That’s the premise of a new video from Big Truck Big RV. The narrator covers most, if not all the pros and cons of both 2WD and 4×4 configurations. Even though desires might dictate buying the biggest, baddest one you can buy, that’s not always the best choice. A 2WD truck just might be the one for you.

The pros of a 2WD truck boil down to two main points. The first is perhaps the biggest, and that’s the cost of ownership. With a 2WD truck, right off the bat, you will spend less at the time of purchase. On top of that, the maintenance is generally cheaper as well. Less complicated parts mean cheaper repairs, and the cost at the pump is generally less than with a 4×4 truck.

The other major pro is the towing capacity. At the most basic configurations, the 2WD will generally be able to haul more than it’s equally-priced 4×4 competitor. Now, obviously, if you want to buy a 4×4 and spend the extra money on the nicer packages, that is a moot point. As far as bang for your buck goes, if you plan on towing on normal, well-maintained roads, the 2WD might be your best bet.

Choosing a 4×4 comes down to one major argument – convenience. If you own a 4×4, you typically won’t have to care about inclement weather, rough terrain, etc. You’re covered in almost every way. Sure, they tend to cost a little more, but you’ll also make that money back in resell value.

Not to spoil the ending, but let’s be real, is there really a choice here for truck enthusiasts? We all know that when push comes to shove, that 4×4 is the logical choice, and you can live out those childhood fantasies of driving over anything!
