Adding OEM LED Headlights & Taillights to Your 2017 F-250

2017 F-250 Super Duty Front

Now, this project isn’t cheap, but it isn’t a difficult one either. And the results are clearly worth it.

The LED headlights and taillights on the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty look great, but they don’t come cheap. They are only standard on the high-priced Platinum trim level and adding them to other models can add anywhere from $1,080 to $3000, depending on the model and package chosen.

Fortunately, one of our Ford Truck Enthusiasts forum members put together a detailed How-To thread showing how to add those high-tech headlights and taillights to an F-250 with the factory Halogen exterior lights, but while this project isn’t a difficult one, this is a fairly pricey appearance mod. If you can just add the LED lighting package to your new F-250, you should spend the $1,080 to have them added at the factory, but if you already have a truck without them- here is the rundown on how to add the premium lighting to your Super Duty.

The Introduction

The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty LED headlight and taillight upgrade how-to thread was put together by forum member “jmeo.” In his initial post, he begins with a quick explanation of his project:

I have successfully converted my 2017 F-250 Lariat Ultimate package halogen headlights and taillights to OEM LED version and I wanted to make a how to thread for others to use. There have been a few pioneers before me (FDNY136, EpicCowlick, rwilimo, Livnitup and Ryan B from F150 Forum) and I would like to thank them all for what they have done for us. I simply gathered information from these brilliant people and with their combined help got it working 100% like factory with all OE parts and no aftermarket harness. Here is what I did.

The Install

The OP walks us through each step of the 2017 F-250 LED lighting upgrade project, staring with the removal of the stock halogen assemblies, covering the wiring changes and finishing with the installation of the fancy new lighting assemblies.

Along with his step-by-step write-up of the LED upgrade, he included a big spread of detail pictures of the wiring as well as several videos of the install. Since many of his pictures are close-up shots of wiring harnesses or bolt locations, we haven’t included them here, instead opting for a couple pictures of the 2017 F-250 Platinum with the high-tech exterior lights, but if you are considering this swap, you will want to check out all of the images and details in the original thread.

The OP includes an elaborate table with all of the items needed to add the LED headlights and taillights to the 2017 F-250 with part numbers, but since prices vary by location, he doesn’t list numbers. However, later in the discussion, he reveals that he paid around $2,000 for the components while others priced out the project to the tune of $3,000.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
