The 5.5′ Bed is the Only Bed Option on the 2017 Raptor
When the 2017 Raptor debuted back at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit last January, it made its appearance as an extended-cab with a 5.5′ short bed. Since we know that the Raptor will be available as either a SuperCrew or SuperCab, we also wondered if there’d be additional bed size options for the new truck.
That answer is very much a no.
During a Twitter chat, Raptor Program Manager Tony Greco confirmed the bad news for those wanting more storage space in the bed of their Raptor.
That doesn’t come as a complete surprise to me, even though many F-150 configurations are offered with either a 5.5′ or 6.5′ bed. Presumably, the suspension components have only been engineered to work with the short bed, and that extra foot might be an engineering problem.
But the Raptor has never really been about payload or towing performance. Sure, it’ll do it, but it’s not necessarily the ideal truck for it. The Raptor is more for jumping sand dunes and blitzing off-road courses. We’re sure the new Raptor will do just fine at that.
