2018 F-150’s High-Tech Offerings Mark Big Step Forward for Pickups

By -

Advanced materials, cutting-edge driver aids, and enhanced safety tech don’t just make the F-150 a truck, but the truck.

The 2018 Ford F-150 will carry the most advanced technology of any Ford truck, or any truck for that matter. Starting this fall, customers can buy the most-popular pickup in America with improved styling and more advancements in several key areas. Some of which have never been exploited.

No other light-duty pickup truck includes as many composite and advanced materials as the F-150. For 2018, Ford carries that forward with its military-grade body and box made from aluminum alloy. That saves weight on the platform to increase performance all around. The alloy design also reduces corrosion and has withstood extensive real-world durability testing.

Underneath the aluminum box sits a boxed ladder frame made from high-strength steel. That gives solid underpinnings for the best-selling Ford pickup.

New Year, New Technology

Ford leads the light-duty market with a number of new advanced features to highlight the company’s leaps in technology. Chief among these is the segment-first adaptive cruise control. This allows the driver to set a cruising speed, like normal cruise control. However, radar and cameras onboard monitor traffic to adjust and maintain a set distance to vehicles ahead. The adaptive cruise control will monitor this distance all the way to a complete stop. New for 2018 is a full stop-and-go feature, which can bring the truck to a complete halt.

Additionally, the F-150 becomes the first truck with Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. Both features work to reduce collisions with both other vehicles and pedestrian. This system has also been enhanced to work better at nighttime.

On the comfort side of technology, F-150 buyers can check boxes for an available 4G LTE modem. This can provide Wifi for as many as 10 devices at once. Outside of storm chasers, we don’t know anybody running 10 devices at once in a truck, but you can do it if you want to!

Audiophiles can also opt for a B&O PLAY high-end stereo system in the F-150. This comes with high-end speakers and tuning to improve fidelity. All these new features join existing F-150 options like Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Blind Spot Information System, 360-degree cameras, and a lane-keeping system.
