2018 F-150 is a Factory Freak on the Track: Truckin’ Fast Wednesday
Believe it or not, nothing but a custom engine tune has been added to this 12-second F-150.
This week’s “Truckin’ Fast Wednesday” video comes to us from the BigKleib34 YouTube channel and features a 2018 Ford F-150 that is being called a “factory freak.” This four-wheel-drive, half-ton pickup runs in the 12-second quarter mile range with an upgrade list that has just one item on it, while not a single actual component has been changed since it rolled off of the assembly line.
The Factory Freak
Before getting into the details of this crazy-quick 2018 Ford F-150 pickup, we wanted to address the whole “factory freak” idea, for those who might not be familiar with the phrase.
Although every component of a vehicle like the 2018 F-150 or the Mustang GT is made with the same components built to the same specifications as the vehicle before and after it on the assembly line, from time to time there are vehicles that seemingly offer unusually high levels of performance. For example, the F-150 in the video above was built on the same assembly line as the rest of the related trucks and the engine was built on the same engine line as the rest of the new V8 motors, but there is no question that this particular half-ton Ford truck is impressively quick.
We should point out that it does have a custom engine tune, but according to the details, everything else about this truck is factory-stock. We can see that it even has the factory wheels and tires, and with this being an FX4 model, it is built to handle rough terrain – not to go drag racing. However, this short bed, short cab pickup gets down the track alongside some of the muscle cars.
Truck vs. Performance Cars
In the video above, the black F-150 makes quarter mile runs against a handful of performance cars, starting with an early S197-era Mustang GT. The truck gets away from the line better, presumably launching in four-wheel-drive, and it just keeps on pulling away – beating the muscle car with a time of 12.95 at 106 miles per hour to the Mustang’s 13.6 at 103 miles per hour.
On the second run, the tuned Ford truck takes on what appears to be a C6 Corvette Z06. When the Corvette driver spends all day at the starting line, the F-150 gets a big head start and cruises to an easy win with a 12.91, even though the Chevy went a second faster after the slow start.
On the third run, the 5.0-powered pickup gets beat by a quick Mustang, but it still runs an impressive 12.90 and while getting beaten by a Build Grand National in the final run of the video, the F-150 lays down a 12.80 at 107.48 miles per hour.
