2018 F-150 in Action: Pro Trailer Backup Assist

By -

Whether you’re a pro “backer-upper” or it’s your first time being faced with this challenge, the new F-150 has you covered.

Despite not being a new technology for the 2018 F-150, the Pro Trailer Backup Assist system found in late-model F-Series trucks was controversial among the Ford Truck Enthusiasts community when it debuted.

Claims that “real truckers” didn’t need these kinds of aids could be heard across the internet, in what sounded like an old folk’s last hoorah before succumbing to the upcoming generation of truck owners and the luxuries they get to enjoy. Like most niceties nowadays, whether it’s something as old-school as the remote-controlled garage door, or something new like in-app TV streaming through a smartphone — safety and convenience technologies are here to stay and for good reason.

Sure, a small percentage of Ford truck owners may be able to back up a trailer like Steve Norris handles the nunchucks, but that doesn’t mean everyone can. So, why not help those folks out and give them better tools as technology progresses?

As this video by the Ford Motor Company shows, the Pro Trailer Backup Assist allows the driver to use a knob to steer the trailer in the direction desired. If you’ve ever backed up a trailer, then you’d know that one must steer in the opposite direction of where the trailer should go — making things confusing and sometimes dangerous for rookies.

The drones utilized to film this video certainly give us a good view from above, showing just how easy it is to maneuver the 2018 F-150 with a (large) trailer in reverse.
Kudos to Ford for always pushing the envelope!
