2011 Ford F-150 Engine: 3.7-liter four-valve Ti-VCT V6

The 2011 Ford F-series offers an all-new engine lineup and the entry level engine for the new Ford F150 is the 3.7L Ti-VCT V6.  This engine was originally debuted in the 2011 Ford Mustang but it has received special tuning and modifications to deal with the rigor of truck use such as a forged crankshaft, cast-iron exhaust manifolds and an aluminum oil pan.  These items help to make the engine more durable for truck use but they also help the new 3.7L V6 to make 300 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque.  The official fuel economy ratings have not been released for this engine application yet but Ford claims that it will be the most fuel efficient base model truck in the segment.  Figure that the current base-model Chevy and Ram trucks offer 195 and 210 horsepower respectively, the 2011 F150 has a tremendous advantage in power so any advantage in fuel economy will make the new F150 base model that much more appealing to customers.  Also, the 2011 Ford F150 with the 3.7L V6 is able to tow up to 6,100lbs when properly equipped ““ an impressive capacity for an entry level truck.

The key feature of the 2011 F150’s 3.7L engine is Ford’s twin independent variable camshaft timing, more commonly recognized as Ti-VCT.  This system allows the engine to offer more power and a smoother torque curve while still working to optimize fuel economy with the most obvious advantages being felt in the way of low end torque.  In the past, these smaller engines have been able to deliver strong low-end torque but they would taper off in the higher RPMs.  At the same time those engines would be less efficient but with the Ti-VCT system the 2011 F150 with the entry level 3.7L V6 will offer uncompromised economy and class leading power.  High energy coil-on-plug systems cause a more complete combustion which helps to lower wasted fuel and improved engine emissions and piston-cooling jets help keep the engine running at optimal temperatures and the intake manifold is made of composite materials and the runners are tuned to optimize power and economy.

Another way that the engine design helps to delivery better fuel economy is through the use of lightweight materials.  The engine block, cylinder heads and oil pan are all made out of aluminum to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle, along with helping the balance the front and rear of the vehicle for enhanced handling.
