Truckin’ Fast Wednesday: 1977 Ford F-150 Pops a Wheelie
Watch as a relatively plain-looking F-150 beats a handful of muscle cars down the quarter-mile.
This week’s “Truckin’ Fast Wednesday” video features a 1977 Ford F-150 Step Side pickup, which has been heavily modified for drag racing. The details on this wicked truck are limited, but we know it has a 390ci V8, a C6 automatic transmission with a TransBrake, and a set of 4.86 rear gears.
Although the 1977 F-150 was offered with the 390 big block, it only had 161 horsepower, while this truck likely has far more power. We can guess that the iron heads have been worked to flow better, while other likely modifications include a big intake manifold and carb, a new cam, a set of headers, and possibly some internal engine machine work.
Unfortunately, Wisconsin International Raceway appears to not be using the timing boards, so we don’t get to see what this F-150 runs. However, we can see that after it launches with the front wheels off the ground, it gets down the track in a big hurry. In fact, this F-150 gets to the finish line before a newer Roush Mustang, and an S197 Mustang.
The audio on this video is a bit quirky, but it’s great to watch a full-size truck drag racing with the wheels up.
