FTE Perf - Quick Question
FTE Perf - what's the small hole in 5.0L thermostat for

Subject: FTE Perf - Quick Question

Hey FTE,

Would like to put a V-8 in my 93 Ranger Splash. Have a 73 302 out of an
old pickup. This would be an easy swap except the 73 302 is bare bones, no
computer or anything. Is this a wise choice? Choice is driven by price,
it's free for the taking. Lastly, automatic or manual tranny??

That hole is a vent hole, it's there to let the air bubble out of the block
so it will fill up with water. It's a good thing. Without the hole it
takes much longer to get the block full of water through the bypass. Not
all themostats open with dry heat, (or at least not at the right temp.) they
need the contact of the hot water to work as designed. Read: overheats
before thermostat opens to let bubble out and coolant in.

Hope this helps.

>My Haynes manual shows a small hole in the plate of the

>stock thermostat for & what am I risking?
